Bullying – Advice for young people
Bullying is when a person or group of people makes someone feel frightened
or bad about themselves. This can include name-calling, violence, theft
or being forced to do something you don’t want to do.
Bullying is very upsetting and people being bullied are often too scared
to tell anyone about it.
Bullies should not be allowed to behave in this way and there are things
that can be done to stop it. It may be difficult, but if you are being
bullied, you must tell a friend, teacher or your parents so that they
can stop the bully. Once you have told someone you are no longer alone
and the bully will have lost their power.
People who are being bullied may feel that they don't want to go to
school and pretend to be ill. But this could get you or your parents
into trouble and will only add to the problem.
In extreme cases, the bullying may involve threatening phone calls or
emails. This is a criminal offence and the police can take action.
