DASH News & Links

welcome to DASH - DASH, a Shipston based organisation, was founded three years ago to reduce
drugs usage and drug related crime and to also raise awareness of drugs
issues in the community. The work of
DASH has already led to much activity in the community towards helping
reduce drug usage. Since the youth project began in 2003, the youth workers
have worked with over 200 teenagers providing advice on drugs, sexual health
and career options. The youth workers have also provided more activities for
the young people in the town. Working with the local community drugs team
DASH helped facilitate the provision of Needle disposal bin to encourage
current drug users to dispose of their needles safely

On the 6th May, DASH held an Alcohol and Cannabis Awareness evening at Shipston High School. The evening included presentations from two speakers: Barry Barnhurst, Shared Care Co-ordinator, and Richard Helyer, a reformed alcoholic.
Firstly, Barry Barnhurst gave an excellent talk on cannabis, explaining the very real dangers to young people that cannabis abuse holds. The treatment of drug addiction is a highly specialised and complex field. Once a habit is established it takes years for treatment to be successful.
The second presentation was from Richard Helyer, who clearly exposed the dangers of allowing social drinking to develop into alcoholism, no matter how well educated you are. His main message was if you wish to stop excessive drinking, you the drinker have to want to give up and it is essential to join a local help group.
The local AA group meets on Tuesday at 7.30 pm at The Ellen Badger Hospital.
Barry Barnhurst is available on Wednesday afternoons at the Medical Centre and he would be pleased to answer any questions, or to meet any worried parents
Dash would like to thank all those who attended the evening and also the Baptist Church for allowing the use of their Technical equipment.

At the Victorian Evening, Dash had a Chocolate Tombola and raised £77. We would like to thank Louise Taylor, Charlie Kelk, Stephanie and Stephen Gray for all their help on the night.

The fund raising concert
, given by the Avon Opera Group at the Townsend Hall on Saturday 20th October, was a great success. Organised by David Squires, approximately 80 people attended and, with a raffle and proceeds from the bar, DASH raised £450 for funds. Our thanks to all, audience and members of DASH who gave up their time on the evening of the Rugby World Cup Final.

The banger rally, Czech Wrecks, held during the first week of September, raised approximately £1060. Our grateful thanks to Gerlinde and Stephen Gray and family, who not only participated in the rally but organised the sponsorship forms and the collection of money. Well done.

The detached part time youth workers, headed by Kieran Mc Gerty, acting on the request from a number of young people in Shipston, have formed a pool team to play other young people in the Warwickshire area.
Our grateful thanks to Mike Yallop, Sales Director of JTL Embroidery, who supplied free of charge, specially printed t-shirts making the team look really professional.
Shipston Massibes’ first match against St Patricks Club, Leamington, was played on 14th November. Their first home match will be played at the Shipston Sports Club on 4th December. This is an excellent example of the benefits of the services of our youth workers from WAYC.

There was an encouraging participation at the recent Open Morning staged by DASH in Shipston High Street.
Several people expressed an interest in becoming involved with the organisation and during the course of the event they raised over £100 on the Chocolate Tombola and received pledges for more than £50 for the Banger Rally to Prague.
Successful DASH-funded outreach work continues in villages. At Quinton, various projects are in hand, including the provision of a Graffiti Wall.
